Winners

Each of the entries of the first ever WSDC has its own strong points. During the evaluation process, the judges tried to determine whether these plays are indeed original and innovative according to their forms, structures, contexts, characters and cultural references. Overall, most of the creations were inspired by historical subjects, and made remarkable presentations of the world’s circumstances and society’s cultural and historical past. Three award winners were chosen as the following order: Holy Crab! by Zhu Yi, Dirty Paws, or How to Make a Great Documentary Film by Zhao Binghao, and Fallacy of the Fist by Chien-Jen Wang.

About the Results

For the first ever WSDC, entries were accepted from October 2014 to February 25, 2015. During this five-month period, the competition received as many as 349 online registrations, 198 of which submitted soft-copy entries, including 181 Chinese ones and 17 English ones. Most of the Chinese entrants come from Taiwan (42.5%) and mainland China (43.1%). Submissions from Hong Kong, Macao and Malaysia made up 14.4% of the entries to this competition. Bilingual playwrights from Taiwan, mainland China and Singapore contributed to the English entries, as well as English and Bulgarian writers currently studying in Asia. The youngest entrant is an 18-year-old high school student from Hong Kong, whose submission had gone all the way through to the final round. This goes to show that creative talent is never limited by age in this new generation. A preliminary screening and an intermediary review were each held for the Chinese and English groups, and 12 Chinese plays and 3 English plays were selected for the final review. Experienced professionals who are fluent in both languages were invited to be the judges of the final screening. Chinese and English plays were reviewed at once, and the three best ones were selected. The panel of judges considered the 15 plays up to par in terms of style and wording. However, two English plays, being more mature and thorough in their respective context, had stood out from all of their Chinese counterparts. We hope that an international competition for young playwrights like this will encourage more great works in the future, and bring the momentum and quality of the Sinophone theatrical community to the next level and beyond.

Diverse cultures jostle on the streets of New York

Going through customs in New York, everyone harbors their own thoughts of trying to smuggle something sinister across the border…stuck on the streets of New York, people of all nations jockey for position…this script sheds the tragic itineraries of early immigrant narratives in favor of a bitingly funny tone, describing disparities in how different cultures might imagine the same event. Bring in a dangerous Chinese Mitten Crab landing in New York, and it becomes all the more apparent how difficult the lives of different peoples in the melting pot of New York can be. This strikingly original and pointed script deploys ingenious cross-cultural puns and double-entendres deftly and with precision.

Holy Crab! was fisrt staged in Chinese by Creative Society at Wellspring Theater in Taipei in May, 2016.

A Spanish version of Holy Crab! was produced in June, 2017. Performences were conducted in El círculo de Tiza, Monterrey Mexico.

An educated young man goes west for adventure

At the dawn of the 21st century, a wave of terrorism breaks out in Xinjiang. The people of the region face violence and nightmarish distortions of reality, like being boiled alive in a pressure cooker. A young man, fresh out of college, travels to Western China to experience life in the wilderness, never expecting that he would encounter such a tumultuous situation and nearly paying with his life.

A re-tell of the vagaries of the Boxers Conflicting

Is history true? Or is it just slices of experience seen through different people’s eyes, narrated through their own ideologies, recorded, and disseminated? The play sets its historical scene through the eyes of a small fox, who acts as an intermediary threading together the stories of the disparate groups and historical figures brought together by the Boxer Rebellion. Five nameless narrators perform their stories, spontaneously entering into different scenes and different characters. Their conflicting accounts give voice to personal experiences that both offer proof of history and denounce it.

Professor in the Shanghai Theatre Academy and vice editor-in-chief of Theatre Arts . Author of Post-modern Theatre and translator of Environmental Theatre and Theatrical Experiences (戲劇經驗). Also author of stage plays such as Zhuangzi Tests His Wife (莊周戲妻), Who Killed the King (誰殺了國王), 1993 (九三年), As Dusts Settle (塵埃落定), Sister Yuqing (玉卿嫂), The Story of Chunqin (春琴傳) and Maste Hungyi (弘一法師). Austin graduated from Master of Fine Arts in Stage and Lighting Design, University of Southern California, USA. Worked as Senior Production Manager and Stage Designer for Cloud Gate Dance Theatre, works like Moon Water, Songs of the
Wanderers. And He has worked with other troupes as well, such as Performance Workshop, Ping-Fong Acting Troupe, Contemporary Legend Theatre, and Ming Hwa Yuan Arts & Cultural Group as stage and lighting designer or technical director for their productions. Selected honors and awards: National Award of Arts presented by the National Culture and Arts Foundation (2014); chief stage designer for the opening/closing ceremony of Taipei Deaflympics (2009); jury member of Prague Quadrennial and the convener of Taiwan team, with the Taiwan Hall project winning the Gold Medal for Best Use of Technology (2007); and Belvedere International Achievement Award presented at the Poland Presidential Palace in Warsaw (2004). From 2016 to March 2021, he was the director of Taipei Performing Arts Center, and currently the CEO of Taipei Performing Arts Center.

[Second Review, Chinese Plays]

Li is currently Artistic Director at Mr.Wing Theatre Company, as well as Associate Professor Rank Specialist and Director at the Graduate Institute of Performing Arts, Tunghai University. As a founding member of the Rive-Gauche Theatre Group and Creative Society Theatre Company, Li made his name as early as the Avant-garde Theatre Movement of 1980s Taiwan and became one of the most active and influential figure in contemporary Taiwan theatre. Later in 1990s, Li expanded his career into the category of musicals, operas and multimedia stage productions, and becoming one of the most presenting theatre director in Taiwan.

Li’s recent directing works include: Giacomo Puccini's Turandot (Deutsch oper am Rhein/National Kaohsiung Center for the Arts-Weiwuying, 2015-19). Jonathan Dove's Monster in the maze (National Taichung Theatre, 2016). Mr.Wing Theatre Company's The Rainbow of Time: a musical; Turn Left, Turn Right: a musical ; Jimmy’s Subway:a musical; The Cherry Orchard 2047; Lutz Hubner's the company thanks (featured in TIFA); Starlight Theatre; Taipei Dad/New York Mom (featured in TIFA). Vincenzo Bellini’s Norma, Richard Wagner’s The Ring Cycle, Richard Strauss’s Elektra, Richard Wagner’s Parsifal and On the Road with the NSO.

John B. Weinstein is Dean of the Early Colleges at Bard College, and Associate Professor of Chinese and Asian Studies at Bard College at Simon’s Rock.  A scholar and translator who publishes on Republican period mainland theatre and contemporary Taiwan theatre, he served as president of the Association for Asian Performance from 2006 to 2011.  He is the editor and co-translator of Voices of Taiwanese Women: Three Contemporary Plays (Cornell East Asia Series, 2015).  He has directed plays in both English and Chinese in the U.S. and Taiwan.

Pippin Parker became director of School of Drama in 2011 after serving as chair of the division’s Playwriting department since 2006. As Playwriting chair, Parker launched programs such as the New Voices MFA Thesis Festival and the Artist-in-Residence series. In addition to his academic experience, Parker is a noted professional playwright and director, once directed “Betrayed”, which won the Lucille Lortel Awards for Best Play. Pippin is founding member and former Artistic Director of Naked Angels theater company in New York City, where he co-conceived the group’s long-running reading series.

Daphne Pi-wei Lei (雷碧瑋) is Professor of Drama, at the University of California, Irvine, and the incoming president of American Society for Theatre Research (ASTR). She is internationally known for her work on Chinese opera, Asian American theatre, intercultural theatre, and diasporic and transnational performance. She is the author of many scholarly articles and of two books: Operatic China: Staging Chinese Identity across the Pacific (Palgrave, 2006) and Alternative Chinese Opera in the Age of Globalization: Performing Zero (Palgrave, 2011). An advocate for diversity, equity and multiculturalism, Lei is the founder and director of “Multicultural Spring” at UC Irvine, a program that promotes multicultural performance since 2007. She also created “Dramatic Transformations,” an annual researchperformance project to raise awareness of diversity through drama in 2012.

Writer and research scholar specializing in western contemporary theatre. Holds a doctoral degree in British and American literature from the University of Iowa, United States. Full-time professor in the Department of Drama and Theatre, National Taiwan University. Author of stage plays such as Once upon a Rainy Night , The Mahjong Game and Playing the Violin ; prose such as Tonight We Play and Misunderstanding Shakespeare ; novel Private Eyes ; and academic writings Narrating Modern Drama . Awardee of the 17th National Culture and Arts Award in 2013.

Ping Lu was born in Kaohsiung, Taiwan by the name Lu Ping. She holds a bachelor’s degree from the Department of Psychology, National Taiwan University and a master’s degree from the University of Iowa in the United States. Ping Lu used to teach at the Department of Theatre Arts and the Graduate Institute of Arts Administration and Management, Taipei National University of the Arts. Her important works include long novels Love and Revolution , Beautiful Island (婆娑之島), East and Beyond, When Will You Visit Again? (何日君再來), and short novels like Monica’s Diary (蒙妮卡日 記), Centennial Notes (百齡箋) and The Forbidden Writings (禁書 啟示錄). Many of her novels have been translated into different languages, including English, French, Japanese and Korean.

Distinguished Professor of Eng. Dept., National Central Univ., Taiwan; project director of Performance Center at NCU; founder of ETI, a digital archive of Taiwan’s modern theatre since 1985; Awardee of NCU Outstanding Research, 2005, 2009-14, 2020; Playwright/director of Creative Society Theatre Troupe since 1997.

After receiving her PhD of Performance Studies at NYU, USA, Katherine Hui-Ling Chou co-founded Creative Society Theatre Troupe in Taipei, and has been the troupe’s core member, director and playwright since 1997. Her artistic credits include: The Apocalypse of Fudingjin (playwright/director, Wei Wu Ying National Kaohsiung Center for the Arts, 2020), Jian Ji: A Just Life (playwright, Grand Opening of Wei Wu Ying, National Kaohsiung Center for the Arts, 2018); President’s Invitation (director of the 3.0 edition, MFA Theatre Troupe of Nanjing Univ.
